Is Ladies Night Discriminatory

There’s been a lot of talk in Gainseville, Florida that ladies night promotions may be coming to an end. And those rumors are true -- to an extent. But the fact is, nothing definitive has happened.

The city’s Office of Equal Opportunity did send a letter to businesses warning them that offering specials and discounts to one gender but not the other could arguably violate Sec. 8-67 of the Gainesville Code of Ordinances.

According to Cecil Howard, the Equal Opportunity director, the letter does not tell bars “halt your actions.”

“I’m just giving bar owners a heads up,” Howard said.

He also said he does not know exactly what action, beyond an “administrative hearing,” would be taken if someone were to file a complaint.

Nothing will be done to stop ladies’ night unless someone does file a complaint with the city, on grounds of discrimination.

Every Wednesday, Gator City offers a selection of free drinks to women until midnight. Hughes said management hasn’t decided what it will do yet if the city tells it to stop.

There’s been talk of “skirt night” or “high heels night,” which would mean anyone wearing said item of clothing would get to partake in drink specials. ‘“I brought up “lipstick night,”’ he said.
